Dragonflies live underwater during their larval stage...

and breathe through gills. This stage may last as long as five years for some large dragonflies. Once ready to become adults they will climb out of the water where exposure to air causes them to begin breathing. They then crawl out of their old skin to become the dragonflies we all know and love.

:)

Bonus fact...dragonflies have six legs but can not walk.
